all our friends will move away
and they're goin' to better places
but our friends will be gone away
nothin' is as it has been
and i miss your face like hell
and i guess it's just as well
but i miss your face like hell
been talkin' 'bout the way things change
and my family lives in a different state
if you don't know what to make of this
then we will not relate
so if you don't know what to make of this
then we will not relate
rivers and roads
rivers and roads
rivers till i reach you
-the head and the heart
this week i began the end of a chapter. one that has allotted me tremendous growth, enormous challenge, and robust life. along the way i have found myself nestled in the warm arms of a family. a family that is completely imperfect, frustrating, irrational, loving, supportive and absolutely ridiculous. a family indeed. as i begin to lay down the text that is to be the poetic narration of the coming year, i cannot help but identify with this song. in only a handful of months my family will be spread across the country, maybe even the world. torn apart physically, perhaps even relationally, but i know, with absolute certainty that my family will never flee the depths of my heart. their handprints eternally embedded deep into my soul. i am so incredibly grateful for the journey we have been on together. for the life lived, the tears that we painfully shed, for the laughter that filled the hallow walls of our tiny apartment, and the thoughts and ideas we eagerly shared under the soft glow of flickering candles. this year, this last time we will all be sharing in life together, i vow to love fully, think critically, and act compassionately.
