tre colori: unification day!

from the moment i opened the large, heavy wooden door that separates my building complex from the rest of the world i knew there was something special about this day. the streets were buzzing with cars and mopeds, and the sidewalks were crowded with le donne chatting to one another in joyful tones, hands holding small mitten covered grasps of their children who happily skipped along. confetti was already littering the streets, fresh mixed with that which still sat in exhausted celebration from carnivale festivities that took place only a week before. the air was heavy with anticipation. that night the energy only increased, as did the number of people lining the streets and shuffling through the center of the city. the ponte vecchio possessed a most beautiful bridal glow as it reflected green, white, and red, national flags waving proudly in the cool night air. between excited cries the notes of songs floated gently in my ears, birthed from great brass instruments and percussion in various piazzas as i walked along the river. as if concerts and decorations were not enough, the night culminated around one in the morning with a display of fireworks that erupted off the tower of the piazza vecchio, and sent the city into childlike admiration and wonder at that most fantastic sight. what an event, what a moment, what a vision to behold. happy 150th birthday, italy.

the tower all lit up.
